Play Tennis With Someone Better

When Christina plays tennis, she doesn't always win. She's not a bad player; quite the opposite.

The reason she doesn't win all the time is that she prefers to play against someone much better than she is.

When she does, it pushes her to play much harder than if she played someone below or even at her level. In fact, she gets mad at herself if she wins too often or too easily...it means that she's not challenging herself enough.

Who we choose to compare ourselves to or compete against significantly impacts our future performance. Lots of people are so afraid of losing, they choose to play against someone they know they can beat or at least compete on a level playing field with.  These people will definitely win more often than Christina. And they may improve somewhat. But they won't advance as far as Christina in the long run. How can they? They are not pushing themselves or learning anything new.

We do the same with our careers. All too often, we compare ourselves to those at our level.  Why not compare ourselves to someone way beyond ourselves? If you own a small company - don't compete against other small companies - compete against the biggest and the best.  If you're a mid-level employee - don't aim for the job just above yours, aim for the top job.

If we compare ourselves to the average, then the average is our benchmark. If we compare ourselves to the best, then that's the bar to beat.

We should request to be on the team of people smarter than ourselves, demand to be the junior man on the senior team, plead to be the inexperienced one on the project staffed with all the most experienced people. If we always surround ourselves with people much better than ourselves and openly declare that we're there to learn and to compete and to improve...then we will learn, we will compete and we will improve.

There Is Hope— It's Just Backwards

The American Association of Retired Persons held a contest in 2007 on YouTube called "U@50". The concept was to ask for videos to be submitted by people between the ages of 18-30 and expand upon the subject of what they expect their lives to be like at the age of 50.

Although first place was awarded to a film studies student at Emerson College in Boston, it was the second place video that has since taken on a life of its own. Created by Jonathan Reed, the video is entitled "Lost Generation". The video is a version of a Palindrome in which a voiceover is used to read the words appearing on the screen from top to bottom, and then reverses itself reading each line up the page and back to the top, changing the meaning of each statement.

The video has been viewed more than 11 million times on YouTube.

Here is the text. Read it and then read it again in reverse. 

Lost Generation by Jonathan Reed

I am part of a lost generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can change the world
I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within.”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy.”
So in 30 years I will tell my children
they are not the most important thing in my life

The Challenge of Changing Your Beliefs (for the better forever)

Early on in the first 90-Day Challenge I noticed, very clearly, that people's beliefs were (mostly) what was getting in their way of accomplishing their goals. What was happening was evidence of what I've claimed for a good while: 

What your mind believes you will achieve— always and in all ways.

Being the guy who put the Belief Busters program together, this was a wonderful opportunity to expose the people in the Challenge to the ideas, tools & techniques I'd developed for transcending our limiting Beliefs. What if we could all learn to think, act and communicate like those who inspire?

Yesterday, I completed my first session of Conversations with a Master of "The Creative process," Robert Fritz. I'm such the liar that although I promised my subscribers they'd have it in their hands on April 15th... they'll get it Monday (the 5th) <smile>. Under promise & over-deliver.

Today, I'm recording with Simon Sinek, a Master of... well... Inspiration. What? Here, from the first chapter of his book Start With Why is a bit more about what that means. (Incidentally, clicking the title link back up there will get you a PDF file of that entire chapter. Great examples of people & companies that Inspire.)

What if we could all learn to think, act and communicate like those who inspire?

I imagine a world in which the ability to inspire is practiced not just by a chosen few, but by the majority. Studies show that over 80 percent of Americans do not have their dream job.

If more knew how to build organizations that inspire, we could live in a world in which that statistic was the reverse— a world in which over 80 percent of people loved their jobs.

People who love going to work are more productive and more creative. They go home happier and have happier families. They treat their colleagues and clients and customers better. Inspired employees make for stronger companies and stronger economies. That is why I wrote this book. I hope to inspire others to do the things that inspire them so that together we may build the companies, the economy and a world in which trust and loyalty are the norm and not the exception. This book is not designed to tell you what to do or how to do it. Its goal is not to give you a course of action. Its goal is to offer you the cause of action.
