You're not paying attention (really) to what the other person is saying… You're impatiently waiting for your turn to speak… You're bored, not interested, can't wait to change the subject… You're day dreaming— dog's barking front porch light is on, but nobody's home… You're interpreting what's being said through your own filters… You've got your agenda (and you're stickin' to it)… You're plotting what you'll say next— which way you're going to steer the conversation… You're agreeing, disagreeing, making things said and the other person right or wrong, arguing, comparing… All kinds of mental-judging of what's being said and of the other person him or herself.

Talk, talk, talk. Quack, quack, quack. "Enough about you, let me tell you about me… You think that's something, well when I was…" One- upsmanship, my dog's (my idea's) better than your dog. I, me, mine… Sooooo self-referential, self-centered & self-absorbed… But hey, you've got important things to say, right? (Surely more important than what they are saying.) And here's a BIGie: You've got to be right, so you make the other person wrong.
Or, you're (always) selling something: Beliefs, ideas, plans, products, your deal… Where you want them to go, what you want them to do, who you want them to be… So you shift into marketing mode… Make 'em an offer they can't refuse, but so many do, refuse. Why? Because…

What you need to be doing— 90% of all the time— is…
Ask. Ask. Ask. Ask. Ask.
The questions are the Answer. Find out WHO and HOW they are? What's up with them… What are their Values (the things that are most important to them). What are their needs & wants, desires & dreams. Make a real Connection (not some drive-by posting on Facebook). Get into "Shipping & Receiving"— Relationshipping, Friendshipping, Partnershipping and Leadershipping.
