There are a few "side" and "future" projects going on in the back office of The MasterMind Sessions, such as building a forum for members to discuss the Sessions, exchange ideas, give us feedback. I'm also assembling a cadre of short clips from each Session that I'm thinking of using as faux podcasts (maybe even "real" ones. Normally, I make about six or seven of these clips as I edit the entire Session. But in this Session with Donna Valdes I made 12 of them!

Why so many? Because Mrs. Valdes: A. Tells it like it really is. B. I like what she has to say. C. I like what she has to say can do for you (if you can "listen like it is"). D. All the above and before and more...

Donna said, "I am not a salesperson. People are my product. This industry is founded on relationships. Viewing people as the product helps to shift the focus from what-can-you-do-for-me to a service attitude of what-can-I-do-for-you."

MLM Network Marketing: Occupational Hazard or...

George F. Will is a Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative American newspaper columnist, journalist, and author. He writes for The Washington Post and also "The Last Word" for Newsweek magazine. I admire and respect his work, especially as a thinker and wordsmith. In his most recent piece, "Caesaropapism Rampant" [Newsweek, June 2, 2008] about the "rhetorical—and related—excesses [which] are inherent in the modern presidency," he penned (or keyed) this brilliant bit:

"An occupational hazard of the inflated presidency is a hazard to the nation. It is what [Gene Healy, author of The Cult of the Presidency: America's Dangerous Devotion to Executive Power] Healy (borrowing a term from psychiatry) calls Acquired Situational Narcissism. As repositories of absurd expectations, and surrounded by sycophants, presidents become deranged. Inevitably, the inflation of expectations causes what Healy calls an "arc of disillusionment" that diminishes one president after another"

I read it three times... on the final go, I swapped out the words "network marketing" for "nation" and "upline" and "mlm guru" instead of "president". I found that even more paragraph intriguing... you?

Self-Esteem: GreatestNetworker Call Replay with Dr. Joe Rubino

Last evening's TeleSeminar with Dr Joe Rubino was a powerful pleasure! The John and Joe Show. The good Dr. really knows his self-esteem stuff (and a lot more as well). Here's TheMasterMindSessions NEWSLETTER for 05.16.08.

"Leaders," asserts this week's Master Doug Firebaugh, "are agents of transformation. But most people in network marketing are too busy building a downline and not building their people to be leaders." Amen and awomen.

Douglas is far from alone in his emphasis on leadership in our business. It's an almost universally held belief that we are in "The Leadership Business."

More than the commercial rest? Yes. It's part of the structure if not the stricture of network marketing, because success here requires creating and leading a team (and here's the all-important bit) of VOLUNTEERS. Boss, captain, chief, head and head honcho, sacho-san... none of these apply in mlm, because nobody here has to do anything. A far different scenario than for a group  of clock punching, performance reviewed employees. To be a leader in network marketing, one (hopefully "you") must truly earn the right. Placement position in the upline-downline doesn't even carry the weight of the brass name plate on the door, much less the upper floor corner office with all the windows.

Why Most Network Marketers are NOT Leaders.

There are four different types of leaders Doug's identified: Retail Leaders (they lead with sales, 50, 100 customers or more). The Builder Leader (the leader in the field, leadership by instinct… even by accident… who doesn't teach it but does it). The Leader in Training (the men and women who are committed to learning to be a leader… this one you mentor). The fourth and highest level of leadership are the Pinnacle Leaders (the super-stars, the leaders at the summit of their game, focusing on helping people, the leaders of leaders ). Doug's also identified the key qualities of leaders: They have a tremendous work ethic… they don't care what others think… and they are focused on multiplication instead of duplication. People will watch what you do and listen to what you say, but they only follow who you ARE. Leaders believe they are leaders. More? It's all here…

Marketing: What's Your Promise and Purpose?

Alex Mandossian (that name link is to his weblog, which is a worthwhile resource of what's new and working with Internet marketing according to Alex) is a marketing guru... specifically now, though not exclusively, a teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters of marketing on the Internet. He's put together a couple (meaning two) videos that are very well worth learning from. Although they are focused on books and info sites... what you glean from them can be applied to ALL kinds of marketing messages from headlines and first sentances to any overall marketing strategy.

One part I appreciated most was that the promise of your book or info product is not the title... its the subtitle. Alex calls it the verb or what your book or info product “does” for your audience. The name is the noun. Interesting watch (also fun to figure what Alex, who you know knows, is doing with his own videos... why in a park, with sun glasses, kids...) here: Promise and Purpose.

Technical Difficulties and NO TeleSeminar last night

Given the genuine disasters of recent cyclones and earthquakes, it would be hard to speak about what happened last night as remotely close to a catastrophe or grave misfortune. However the informal definition of "a total failure" comes close. The heretofore infallible Instant TeleSeminar folks "falled" and the call and show did not go on.

So... dropping back 15 yards (13.716 meters for you new Americans) and punting, we'll break the every two-week pattern and do a Greatest Networker TeleSeminar next Tuesday, the 20th and the following Tuesday we'll be back on schedule.

Personal Development: How do you change your beliefs?

We use the word paradigm to refer to a point of view... the way it is, whatever the "it" is we're talking about. There are paradigms for every domain of life and work. A paradigm is a belief. The words are interchangable. Look and see for yourself.

A classic example of a marketplace paradigm is the wristwatch: Until the 1970s, geared timepieces—the "Swiss watch"—were the dominant paradigm; jeweled movements, mainsprings, winding mechanisms (think Rolex)... With the development of cheap semi-conductors and wafer thin batteries, the quartz watch (think Seiko)—with its greater accuracy and low price—became the new paradigm of wristwatches.

In a more a human arena, a paradigm is the underlying belief we are operating from.

Our beliefs are habits of thought—those things we think about a given subject most consistently and frequently—and the associated feelings that come with those thoughts. Beliefs and memories are also the same thing. 

One important thing to know about our beliefs and memories is they are NOT the truth. They are always our interpretations of past events. Just like six eye-witnesses to the same street crime will describe six different sets of details... or at various stages and ages in our lives we remember the exact same incident very differently.

Our memories and beliefs—our paradigms—are NOT real. They're made up. And they change in an instant when new, more compelling information becomes available.

The following true story by Frank Koch, which appeared in an issue of Proceedings, the magazine of the United States Naval Institute, illustrates how one simple, yet profound new bit of information dramatically changed a very big paradigm 180 degrees in an instant. 

As background, let me explain that at the time of this story, a battleship was THE most formidable navel war vessel in the world. It was three football fields long (longer than most skyscrapers are tall), weighed 50,000 tons, carried a crew of 1500 sailors and had nine 16" guns that could fire a one-ton explosive shell and blow up a target as small as a tank 23 miles away.

Two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been at sea on maneuvers in heavy weather for several days. Koch was serving on the lead battleship and was standing watch on the bridge as night fell. Frank Koch recounts his experience.

"The visibility was extremely poor with patchy fog, so the captain remained on the bridge, keeping an eye on our navigation activities."

"Shortly after dark, the lookout on the wing of the bridge reported, 'Light, bearing on the starboard bow!'

"The captain called out, 'Is it steady or moving astern?'

"The lookout replied, 'Steady, captain,' which meant that we were on a collision course with that source of light.

"The captain then called to the signalman, 'Signal that ship: We are on a collision course... advise you change course 20 degrees.'

"Back came the signal from the other ship. 'Advisable for you to change course 20 degrees!'

"The captain barked, 'Send, I'm a captain... change course 20 degrees immediately.'

"'I'm a seaman second-class,' came the reply. 'You had better change course 20 degrees!'"

"By this time, the captain was furious. He spat out, 'Send, I am a battleship! Change course 20 degrees.'

"Back came the signal from the flashing light...'

"I am a lighthouse."

All it takes to change a paradigm, even the most firmly entrenched and universally agreed upon, is one new piece of information.

Admittedly, with a belief you and I have held on to as our dominant paradigm for 20, 30, 40 years or more, that may require some consistent effort over time. But if the experts are correct and you can establish a new habit in 21 to 28 days... we're always less than one month away from changing our lives for the better... forever.

Self-Improvement: One way the mind and brain work as one.

From my work on BeliefBusters, this (a tad "heady" perhaps, and none the less fascinating in terms of how the mind and brain work together to run your life):

As time goes by (play it again Sam), there's an increasing harmonic convergence between the interdisciplinary branches of psychology and neuroscience that aim to understand how the structure and function of the brain relate to specific psychological processes and overt behaviors. Try this on for size and shape and see if it fits.

Were you aware (fun and pun intended) that you and I are not cognizant of 99.99995 of all that's happening around and within us?

At any given moment in time the human brain is processing up to 4 billion individual bits of data. However, we are consciously aware of only about 2000 (.00005 percent) of these pieces of information.

What enables us to focus our attention on those 2000 things we ARE consciously aware of is the brain's Reticular Activating System (RAS), the name given to the part of the brain (the reticular formation and its connections, which is situated at the core of the brain stem between the myelencephalon—medulla oblongata, and mesencephalon—midbrain) believed to be the attention center. The RAS is the key to "turning on your brain," and also seems to be the center of motivation. The activity of this system is crucial for maintaining the state of human consciousness.

The RAS is the part of your brain where the world outside of you and your thoughts and feelings from "inside" of you meet. The information processed by the RAS includes data such as the experience of the warmth of the sun on your body and surroundings, the feeling of the clothes on your skin, the smell of newly mown grass, the sounds of children playing, the din of traffic, wind in the trees and birds singing, as well as the words spoken by a professor in a lecture or an actor on TV. It also includes the information from inside the head, your thoughts and feelings.

All of that "input" must be processed, filtered and sorted, so that what's most important is paid attention to, and what's not important (at the moment) is ignored. Without this filtering by the RAS we would be constantly distracted and overwhelmed by all the external and internal "noise" (remember; 4 billion individual bits of data at any point in time).

What is "important"— and the actions, behavior, choices you make and the results you achieve—will be determined by each individual's unique RAS and the set of circumstances he or she is encountering at that moment. Your RAS acts as the brain/mind's search engine and just like Google, it operates with an algorithm that tells your mind what specific steps to perform (in what specific order) in order to carry out a specified task.   

The determination of what is or is not "important" will be based on your fundamental beliefs about who and how you are relative to the specific circumstances and the task at hand.

Henry Ford said, "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." Beliefs are habits of thought, so if think you can do something or think you can't do something consistently, over time, that will become you your predominant belief on the subject. And your mind—running in direct physical parallel and partnership with your brain's Reticular Activating System—will govern every action, behavior, choice you do or do not (can or can't) make... and the results you achieve.

Self-Improvement: Action... it's may not be for what you think it is.

I've been posting over at MLM.com in what's become a very popular thread titled: What do you believe about belief...? One of the issues that's come up is the role of Action—which comes first Action or Belief (chicken or egg deal). I posted this <snip> from one of my favorite books and authors there and thought it worthy of posting here as well. Enjoy.

You create, then you receive your creations, then you experience them. Action is for receiving and experiencing.

In your life, although you may not know it, you create your experiences first in your Self, spirit, being, then in your mind, then by your words, finally by your actions. It starts at being then moves on to thinking then to speaking then to acting.

In fact, acting only puts into place the system necessary to receive and experience what you create in being, thinking and speaking.

Most people do not focus, nurture and tend to their first three steps of being, thinking and speaking ? all they do is work like crazy all day and wonder why they are not successful. They do not use The Word. The Word refers to the laws of the universe, the way the universe works, on all levels, not just the visible and physical. These laws of the universe are not some commandments of God. They are simply the laws that regulate and enable the universe. These are laws that work not only spiritually, but can also be proven scientifically using quantum physics.

The Word, these laws, has nothing to do with a particular religion or person or whatever else?the laws of the universe apply equally and unfailingly to everyone and everything at all time. They never err. These are laws such as the law of cause and effect (called karma or reaping and sowing in spiritual teachings, or the energy conservation laws in science) and so on?which are covered in various parts of this book.

Actions are part of The Word, The Laws of The Universe, but they are only a small component of it. It is important to know what role actions play and how to use them in creating wealth or anything else. Actions are important, for sure, but you must understand that they are the last step. Their role is to receive what you already have created on your other three levels.

You create, then you receive your creations, then you experience them. Action is for receiving and experiencing.

You create a business in your Self, your being, then in your thoughts and words, and then you act to set up a system to receive this business in a manifested physical way so that you can experience it. See?

Action does not create. It only receives and experiences.

In fact, when it comes to experiencing, again action does not create the experience?the mind does. Action just helps the mind in "doing" the thing, then the mind decides "will I experience this positively, negatively, joyfully, fearfully, fast, slow?"
