Do you know Brian Johnson? He's a self described student of life who "loves reading, writing, creating, changing the world and fun stuff like that." A few years back, he created the social networking website Zaadz.com (where he was CPO—Chief Philosophical Officer), which was recently transformed into the new and rapidly growing, open community Gaia.com. Brian also created thinkArete.com "Concentrated wisdom for the busy self-actualizer" and publishes an eletter called The Big Idea, which is one of the few daily inbox entries I ALWAYS read. All of this and he's only 33 years old. (This) one wonders what he'll be when he grows up.
Brian's latest project is a "Why didn't I think of that?" (which only Brian would have thought of and actually gone and done) enlightened deal called PhilosophersNotes, think of it (and them) as CliffsNotes, study guides for sincere and serious students of personal and professional-development.
What Brian's done with these Notes is to create condensed highlightings of some of the most popular and profound books around most of us do not make the time to read... even though we want to and know we "should."
From contemporary titles such as Rich Dad Poor Dad and The Four Hour Work Week, to classics such as Spiritual Economics and The Science of Getting Rich, Brian has put together PDFs and Mp3s for you to review quickly and easily, get the gist of the book AND (this is the part I value most) make a now educated choice to commit to reading the real deal or no (and if not, you've got a pretty rich hit of the subject none-the-less).
That's just what I did with The 80/20 Principle. It's been sitting on the book pile on my desk for months, unopened. I downloaded Brian's Mp3, listened while whipping through email and doing some rote HTMLing, was intrigued by what I heard and wanted to know more, so... I'm now reading the book. Thank you Brian! It would still be unread if not for The PhilosophersNotes.
Brian sent this email (below) out to his "Friends" today. Since you are mine (friend) and I know he won't mind, I'm sending it along to you and yours. Free samples and a 20% discount. NOT an affiliate deal for me. Simply a sincere turn-on to a time-saving, knowledge and wisdom building learning tool. Here's Brian's letter. Enjoy.

“The difference between where you are today and where you’ll be five years from now will be found in the quality of books you’ve read.” ~ Jim Rohn
Greetings:
I wanted to send you a quick update on my new business: <>PhilosophersNotes (think mini-CliffsNotes for self-development books :)
The quick version:
I’d love to give you (and your friends and family who you think would enjoy!) 5 free samples (PDFs & MP3s) of my PhilosophersNotes and 20% off the subscription price.
Just cruise over to: PhilosophersNotes.com
… and get MP3/PDF PhilosophersNotes on these great classics:
Deepak Chopra’s Seven Spiritual Laws of Success (incredibly simple yet powerful book that helped catalyze my decision to sell Zaadz) Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth (Oprah's new favorite book :)
Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Successful People (THE book that started me on the personal development path)
And, two Notes on new books by two of my friends that I have no doubt you’ll love:
Brent Kessel’s It’s Not About the Money (Released April 1st and totally transforming my relationship with money) Shawn Phillips’ Strength for Life (hits shelves April 27th and is the best fitness book I’ve ever read. Shawn’s brother Bill wrote “Body for Life” and this is a powerful next gen version of it!)
My friend and and favorite author, Dan Millman (who wrote Way of the Peaceful Warrior), shared these kind words about PhilosophersNotes:
“I think that your PhilosophersNotes are an idea whose time has come — but primarily because you're the one who is writing them. I believe that your life to this point has prepared you for this task. It seems a fine service to the reading public, and to authors and publishers, as you introduce readers to some valuable nuggets of the perennial wisdom.”
The longer version:
“If I read a book that cost me $20 and I get one good idea, I’ve gotten one of the greatest bargains of all time.” ~ Tom Peters
As you know, the decision to merge Zaadz with Gaiam was a big one for me. After transitioning out of the day-to-day flow of the business, I immersed myself back into the study of universal truths and meditated on the next step of my hero’s journey.
It quickly became clear to me that my next step involved giving myself my own Ph.D. in “Optimal Living.” I figured I’d earn a master's when I’d distilled the wisdom from 100 of my favorite self-development books—by authors ranging from Buddha and Lao-tzu to Nietzsche and Rumi; from Eckhart Tolle and Byron Katie to Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra. My original plan was to simply immerse myself in this wisdom and embody these perennial truths in my own life while creating summaries I could share with my friends and family.
Then, on a long flight from Tokyo back to the US, I happened to have a SkyMall catalog in my lap (OMG! Who came up with all those products?!? ?) and opened to an ad for a company that provides summaries of business books “for the busy executive.” As I read their ad, I had one of those “AHA!/Hallelujah!!!” moments of inspiration and clarity where it became obvious to me that someone should be doing the same thing for self-development books “for the busy self-actualizer”!!!
And, I realized that someone should be me. ? So, I decided to take my plan to distill 100 of my favorite books and create a conscious business around it.
Enter: PhilosophersNotes
The idea is simple: you’re busy. AND you’re committed to reading/learning/growing and all that good stuff. When you put those two together, it can be hard to keep up!!!
Have you noticed that in any given book, there are usually a bunch of REALLY “Big Ideas”—those life-changing gems that really make an impact in your life (those pages are usually all marked up, underlined, starred, highlighted and all that goodness in my books! ?)?!?
Well, what I’ve done is opened up my favorite books, gone straight to those pages with the BIG IDEAS and created “PhilosophersNotes” that quickly give you the inspiring gems along with my thoughts on how these ideas have impacted my life and how they can impact yours—all in the context of a 6-page PDF or a ~20-minute MP3 (so you can decide if you’d prefer to read over a cup of tea or listen on your way to work, on a hike, at the gym, doing errands or whatever’s best for you!).
Alright. That’s more than enough from me. ?
I trust you’re doing great and hope to have the opportunity to share PhilosophersNotes with you and hear what you think!
Hugs and high fives,
-bri
